Excitement in the Village!
For our registered participants: Final details are falling into place for your visit to Asheville in June. On the Dashboard in the website we have posted two more links for you to complete. These are all the details we need to know to make your week more comfortable, as well as some of the extras we are offering. Log in as you have in the past, using the same user name you have been using, and type in your password. The Dashboard will show up on the far right of the menu bar; you can click on it to get to the links with these final preferences and travel information.
We have just sent e-mail notices informing our participants of the classes which you will be taking with our wonderful instructors. Less exciting but important, we have also sent reminders to those in single rooms with instructions for how to pay the single supplement. Please look for your notice if you requested single accommodation. Finally, and definitely of interest, we have informed those sharing rooms of the name of your roommate. If you have not received your notice(s) and should have, please get in touch with us.
For our first time visitors, our registration is still open and we have room in many classes. Go first to our Classes page—see the link above—to check out the offerings. These classes offer something for beginning calligraphers as well as those who are more experienced. Once you have decided on the courses you would like to take, proceed with registration. You will see that some classes have been greyed out on the Class Selection page; they are at maximum capacity and have waiting lists, but many others have space.
We are now accepting students for half-week classes. You may have a family reunion or a wedding or for other reasons, just can’t spend a whole week away. Please contact us directly for this option.
The 35th international calligraphy conference, A Show of Hands, alludes to the hands-on craftsmanship that makes the art of calligraphy so special. These conferences bring together an international collection of fine instructors and suppliers to the trade. Most importantly they are open to people from every skill level, from beginner to master, who have a passion for the lettering arts. If you are a beginner, you will be taking classes from some of the best teachers available, who will give you a wonderful foundation for learning this craft. And if you have more experience, there are many classes that will teach you new hands, new media, and focus on creating great design. Attending is a great way to renew old friendships and start new ones, while building and honing your calligraphy skills.
This conference will be held in the heart of North Carolina’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC. This walkable campus has great classrooms and a cafeteria focused on nutritious, healthy foods. Our temperatures in June are typically a bit cooler than lower altitudes, and nearby Asheville, NC is a favored destination for many travelers.

The first international calligraphy conference was held at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota in 1981. It was an effort put together by Jo White and the Colleagues of Calligraphy, supported by the great British scribe, Donald Jackson. It brought nearly 600 scribes to the campus. It signaled the formation of an amazing community that continues to this day, evolving into a gathering of commercial and fine artists whose passion is hand lettering. Year after year the faculty has included some of the best scribes in the world, who have consistently introduced new concepts and techniques, fostering experimentation with a variety of media.
